| BREEDING DATES Artificial Insemination August 6th August 7th August 9th |

| August 10, 2008 Wonder was successfully bred via artificial insemination on the 6th, 7th, and 9th of this month. Today she seems to be going out of heat and is unwilling to allow Howie to try and breed her again. She is pretty snappy if he doesn't leave her alone. Good sign, maybe we got it done! :) We elected to do A.I. instead of a natural breeding because of the size difference between Howie and Wonder. Wonder is not small enough for us to foresee any potential problems with motherhood but Howie is a bit heavier and a little overzealous and kept knocking her over trying to breed her. Howie is also taller on leg than Wonder is and was having difficulty getting a tie. Last fall we attempted to breed Wonder to Howie naturally, we did not get a tie at all and missed out on the breeding. Howie is an experienced stud dog and has produced litters without successful ties but Wonder was not one of those. We had no puppies. Now we have to wait and see if Wonder is in Whelp. We are considering an Ultrasound with our vet sometime around the 30 day mark to see if we can detect a pregnancy. We will not do any palpation to try and feel for puppies. I am very excited at the prospect of a new generation of Wonder Puppies!! Current Measurements and stats Waistline: 13inches Weight: 11lbs Eating dry kibble with some canned mixed in for dinner, canned only for breakfast, decent appetite. September 6, 2008 Wonder is eating reasonably well and is adjusting to the move to our new house. She is continuing with her obedience training in short sessions. She, however, is not currently attending any of my training classes with me, much to her displeasure. She has an appointment on the 9th, which will be day 34 from the first breeding for an ultra sound. At present she weighs in at 10lbs 15oz so is approx. the same weight as when we started. He waist measures at just over 13 inches. Depending on the results of the ultra sound we will switch her to puppy food, brand yet to be determined, and back off on any high impact, high energy training in exchange for walks around the neighborhood. The idea is to keep her fit so she will be able to handle labor and delivery without stressing her body to much. It has enough work to do to grow our next litter of champions! September 9, 2008 Wonder had the all important ultrasound appointment today at our vet clinic. The vet says she seems to be in perfect health and is a good weight. The ultrasound was exciting and showed us at least two puppies. Current measurements and stats Waistline 13.5 inches Weight 10.7 lbs eating canned three dog bakery food well, being picky with dry food :) good appetite. September 23, 2008 We are able to feel Wonder's Puppies move around for the first time today. How exciting. Wonder is starting to get milk but only a little bit. Wonder has become picky about her food and we are starting to give her canned food to try and keep her eating. She has an appointment on October 1st to do the X-Ray to confirm the number of puppies and see if they are about ready. September 26, 2008 Wonder turned five years old today! Happy Birthday! Current measurements and stats waistline 16 inches weight 11.13lbs picky with food, eating three times a day canned food or home made food. October 1, 2008 Wonder had her X-Ray appointment today and we have confirmed two puppies. They both look to be a good size, not to big, not to small. The vet says there should be no problems with delivery. I am so excited, I can hardly wait until they arrive. Wonder is being really picky about what she eats so we are having to cook for her. She cant eat much at one time so we feed her small amounts three of four times a day. So far she is doing well and likes to have her belly, which is really big, rubbed. October 3, 2008 Wonder's tempature has dropped to 98.2 The puppies should be on the way in 12 - 24 hours Her waistline measures at 16.5 inches today. I can't wait until the babies are here. October 4, 2008 Wonder has started the first stages of labor, it began in earnest about 3:00pm. Even yesterday Wonder was trying to dig a den in a big leaf pile. Today Wonder is panting and nesting and trying to go under beds or behind chairs if she can. We will be watching her all night and hopefuly we will see puppies soon. October 5, 2008 Mr. Wonderful has arrived!!! Wonder began having contractions at 10:00am after keeping me up all night panting and nesting in her box and on my bed. She keeping having contractions throughout the morning and into the early afternoon by 2:30 we called the E-clinic and took Wonder in. The doctor tried to stimulate stronger contractions but determined that the puppy we were trying to deliver wasn't going to fit through the pelvis and we agreed on c-section. Wonder had other ideas though and managed not only to push the puppy past the point the doctor said she couldn't but also managed to push his head partially out. The doctor tried to deliver the puppy from there but was not able to. At a little after 4:30 Wonder was rushed into surgery for an emergency C-section. At 4:50 the first of the two puppies was delivered, and a few minutes later the second puppy followed. The first puppy was revived quickly but the second wasn't so lucky. In spite of the fact that he was alive at birth he was to heavily sedated and oxygen deprived from being stuck in the birth canal and the sedatives given to wonder for surgery that the vet was unable to fully revive him. He died just after 5 pm. :( Wonder is still heavily sedated and doesn't seem to be recovering well. The vet refused to follow the protocol for sedation developed by a breeder vet that is appropriate for Tibetan Spaniels. Wonder is still totally unresponsive now 7 hours after surgery. We are told to just wait and let her come out of it on her own. The surviving puppy is nursing well and seems really strong. He is soooo cute!!! I can't wait to see him grow up. Puppy stats Birth weight 5.3 oz Sable with white raven on chest, white feet/toes. October 7, 2008 Wonder was examined by our regular vet today, who confirmed that Wonder's surgery could have been handled better. Now though she seems OK. Still she isn't herself but she isn't lethargic either. The only caution was to watch her incision to make sure it didn't get red and to keep an eye on her temp because it is slightly elevated. Mr. Wonderful also went to the vet and was given a clean bill of health and had his dewclaws removed. While we were at the vet his umbilical cord fell off. He's already growing and changing. He is also gaining weight. Already he weighs in at 7.1 oz. |
