BLACK TIE KENNELS
where breeding, training, and handling
is a formal affair
About Tibetan Spaniels
The Tibetan Spaniels hails from the monasteries of Tibet where legend has it, he patrolled the
walls watching the grounds and turned a giant prayer wheel. Tibbies were also companion dogs to
the monks who lived in the monasteries and were considered sacred.
They are small dogs weighing in between 9 and 15
pounds although some dogs can weigh as much as
20 pounds. The coat of a Tibetan Spaniel is long and
somewhat thick but no so long or thick as a pekenese.
It normally doesn't matt and is easy to care for with
weakly brushing. Tibbies do shed but this can be kept
to a minimum with proper brushing and diet. You will
need a good vacuum cleaner though to suck up the
hair that wasn't brushed out. The coat can be any
color or combination of colors. Blond is the most
common color in the USA but there are also parti
colored dogs of several varieties, black and black and
tan, white, and variations of red. So far there are no
blue or liver colored dogs. Liver colored noses or eye
rims and light colored eyes are not allowed by the
breed standard because of the health problems they
produce. Generally a very quiet dog a tibbie will most
definitely bark to warn of new people coming to your
home. Tibbies don't possess a very loud or deep
bark, but  are also not yappy as many small dogs are
known to be. They make excellent house dogs
because of their clean manner. They are in fact very
cat like often grooming themselves much like a cat,
and lying in a spot of sun from a window, or even
better on the window seal.  Like cats tibbies like high
places, such as the back of a couch,  where they can
survey their home. While you will never find a dog
more loving towards his family a tibbie can be aloof
with strangers, he is a very dignified dog. They also
generally get along well with other animals in the
home and are wonderful with children.
about tibetan spaniels
Training your tibetan spaniel can be challenging but is a definite
must. They are very good at slipping through doors or under
fences. They don't respond well to harsh or negative methods
and are to small to safely use shock collars with so positive
training is the way to go. Tibbies are very very smart and often try
to out wit their owners, sometimes they are successful. They are
not commonly seen in the obedience ring but are definitely
capable of such contests. They also excel in Agility and Rally-O
and some even have tracking dog titles. They are versitle enough
to run an agility course one day, go to a conformation show the
next and lie on the couch for the rest of the week. The Tibetan
Spaniel's quiet intelligence makes him ideal for use as a therapy
dog. Most tibbies can learn tricks and bring smiles to many who
are ill. You simply can't beat a dog as cute and cuddly as a tibbie
in a nursing home or hospital.
Tibetan Spaniels are typically very healthy dogs.
They are only prone to a few genetic health
issues compared to other breeds which have
several you must worry about when purchasing a
dog. The main worry to breeders is Progressive
Retinal Atrophy  or PRA. It is an eye disorder that
causes a dog to eventually go blind. There have
also been recorded cases of Hip Displaysia
though it is rare in tibbies.
Under normal circumstances Tibbies tend to be
very hardy dogs otherwise. Because of their
short muzzle and coats care must be taken
during hot weather to see that they don't
overheat. Tibbies do not do well at all living
outside and must be kept indoors.
